Mrs. Lise Choate - Math 7

Hello to my new amazing 7th grade students. I am your 7th grade math teacher on Team Extreme this year. This will be my 29th year teaching at Arroyo Seco. I have taught both 8th and 7th grade math over the years, 7th grade is my favorite.

I grew up in Minnesota loving the lakes in the summer and snow in the winter. When I graduated from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD I took a job teaching in California. My parents drove me across the country to help me start my career. I quickly feel in love with California and stayed. I earned my Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Cal State Bakersfield in 2003.

My amazing husband, Mike Choate and I have two beautiful children, now all grown up. My children thrived at Arroyo Seco as students and went on to enjoy high school at Saugus and West Ranch. Our son Blake, is 25 and a full time beach lifeguard in Oceanside, CA. Our daughter Kayla, is a graduate of the University of Oregon, GO DUCKS. She is now a marketing director and even coordinator for Portland American Business Journal. She will start her masters degree at the Portland campus at U of Oregon in the fall.

My new hobby is crocheting. I have made over 50 blankets in 3 years. I encourage students to join my crochet club. We will meet at lunch on Tuesdays in my room when clubs begin.

I am the person you can trust to help you succeed in school and in life. So let’s get to know each other this year, while we learn math together.

My goal is to create meaningful relationships with each of you. I strive for a classroom with positive interactions. I want you to think of me as your math coach this year. We will use my wall whiteboards, group activities as well as the textbook and IXL program to do our math practice together each day.

Parents please be your child's guide to success, but leave the hard learning stuff up to them, they can do it if they put their mind to it.

Mrs. Erika Garcia - Science 7

Hi, I am Mrs. Garcia, and I am looking forward to a great year with your child in science class. I’ve been teaching middle school for 20 years and I truly enjoy helping students develop the skills to think like scientists and become responsible learners.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Cal Poly Pomona, and my Teaching Credential and Master’s Degree in Education from National University. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and moved to Santa Clarita 17 years ago to raise my family. My husband and I have a 14-year-old daughter who is beginning her freshman year at Saugus High School.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, listening to music and audiobooks, and going for walks with our 5-year-old boxer.

I am looking forward to working together this year to support your student’s growth in science class!

Ms. Emily Floyd - World History 7

Hi, I'm Ms. Floyd and I am so excited to be your 7th grade World History teacher this year! This will be my fifth year teaching history and my fourth year at Arroyo Seco.

I grew up right here in Santa Clarita and even attended Arroyo Seco when I was in junior high. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Archeology from UC Santa Cruz, followed by my Teaching Credential and Master's Degree from CSU Northridge. My fiancé is also a teacher in the district, and we love being a part of the community we both grew up in.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy running and training for races, reading, crocheting, and attending concerts.

I'm looking forward to having a great year together in History!

Team Rules & Expectations for Success

Team Rules

1. Be Positive – Use kind words and actions.

2. Be On Time – Be in your seat, ready to start, when class begins.

3. Be Prepared – Bring all materials and have your work ready.

4. Be Respectful – Treat classmates, staff, and school property with care.

5. Do Your Best – Give full effort on all work and activities.

Team Expectations

On time means students are in their assigned seat ready to learn.
No hats, hoods, or beanies in classrooms.
No gum anywhere on campus.
No grooming (brushing hair, applying makeup, etc.) during class.
Cell phones must be off and kept in backpacks during the school day.
Air Pods (wireless earbuds) must be kept in backpacks during the school day.
Wired headphones must stay put away until a teacher says you can use them.
Bathroom use is for emergencies only (use the bathroom pass if needed).

Team Policies

Google Classroom

History: Google Classroom will be used for posting weekly agendas, digital assignments, and the Interactive Notebook (INB) Table of Contents.
Math and Science: All assignments and materials will be posted daily on Google Classroom.

Homework

Students will be expected to complete up to 20 minutes per subject per day. Not much homework is given on Fridays.
Parents can refer to the Team Homework Calendar and Google Classroom for information about homework assignments.

Late Work

Submission Window: Students will have one week from the original due date to submit late assignments.
Penalties: Late submissions will receive partial credit, points will be determined by each teacher.
Absolute Deadline: Work will no longer be accepted after the one-week late submission window has closed.

Test Retakes / Redo's

Test corrections and retakes will be allowed for Math assessments.

Infinite Campus Updates

The Infinite Campus grading system will be updated at least weekly for Math, Science, and History.

SURFER Time

Students are expected to bring a personal reading book to school and have it with them for silent reading during designated SURFER time, which takes place four days a week after lunch.

Important Before School Reminders

The Summer Check-in Makeup day is Monday, August 11, from 8:00-11:00 a.m. in the main office.
For 7th graders and new students, we will open the campus from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Monday, August 11th, for you to come onto campus with your parent(s) to familiarize yourselves with the campus and find your classrooms.
Print or write the class schedule on page 144 of the student planner.

Students and parents involved with Team Extreme Teachers should regularly check Google Classroom for updates and assignments. Students will use their school email to login.

Importance: Google Classroom provides a centralized location for teachers to post announcements, assignments, and resources, and it allows for students to submit work and track their progress. This helps students stay organized and on top of their workload.
